| 10:00 | Session 1: Good practice and integrity in data handling (led by Dr Sean Rands) |
|
In this session, we will explore some of the pitfalls you may encounter in generating and maintaining a working dataset, and look at good open science practice that will make your datasets publication-ready and, more importantly, usable by yourself! You are encouraged to bring along a copy of some of your own data (on your own electronic device), if you have some available and are willing to explore it with others. Because this exercise might involve reformatting the dataset in some manner, please make sure that you have back-up copies stored so that you don’t accidentally damage your data! Coffee/tea will be provided at 11:00 |
| 12:00 | Lunch |
| Lunch is not provided for delegates on the workshop day, but lots of good food opportunities are available locally. |
| 13:00 | Session 2: Pathways to Positive Fieldwork (led by Dr Clemency White and Lauren Giroux) |
| Fieldwork is a cornerstone of research for many behavioural biologists, providing intense and exciting opportunities to experience study systems up close. However, expectations, support and preparation vary widely. This workshop is based on 12 months of research & development into fieldwork culture within the University of Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences, and is designed for all PG students and staff involved with field-based research and teaching. Here, you will find out about the best practice tools that have been created to empower students and staff, hear about diverse fieldwork experiences, and provide valuable feedback to shape how these tools are rolled out. |
| 15:00 | Tea break |
| Life Sciences Building Atrium |
| 15:30 | Session 3: Animal Research Ethical Review, and publication ethics (led by Dr Sean Rands) |
| In this session, we’ll discuss the ethical review processes for animal research, and consider the different types of reporting standard expected in different publications. We’ll also consider the publication process, and explore some of the points between starting to write a manuscript and finally seeing it in print where you could face ethical issues. |
| 17:30 | Conference reception |
| Life Sciences Building Atrium |
| 18:30 | Workshop day ends |
| There will be a pub quiz at a local institution starting at 19:30, with lots of good food opportunities nearby. |
